The Unhealthy Truth of the Food Industry
One in 3 children now has autism, allergies, ADHD or asthma. Is it a coincidence? Robyn O’Brien, author of The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick And What We Can Do About It, joins Radio Show Host and Nutritionist, Suzanne Landry on The Natural Medicine and Nutrition Hour on 95.9 FM WATD for a new perspective on food. According to the New York Times, Robyn O’Brien is “food’s Erin Brockovich” who describes herself as an unlikely crusader for healthy food as an upper level finance manager who was raised on Twinkies and PoBoys in Houston Texas. She didn’t think much about food until three years ago when her fourth child was diagnosed with food allergies which began her quest for more information on how to keep her family healthy.
She shares some of the shocking truths that she uncovered about the American food supply with us in her book. Some highlights of our discussion include how as recently as 1994 the US began to engineer foreign proteins in order to enhance profitability for the food industry, lack of labeling to help consumers identify these toxins, what foods contain them and how they are impacting our health, her 80/20 rule that has helped maintain a healthy balance in her own home, suggestions for families with picky eaters, how we can all be part of the solution to have access to healthy food and information about her foundation – AllergyKids – whose mission is to protect children from chemicals not found in other children’s foods around the world (http://www.allergykids.com).
